Animal Enrichment
the Zoo Store is open

The Meerkats think Halloween pumpkins are fascinating!Animal Enrichment

What is enrichment, and why do we do it?
The dictionary definition of enrich is "to make rich, or richer," or "to better or improve." At the Zoo, this is exactly what we try to do for the animals! Enrichment is an attempt to make the animals' environment stimulating and/or challenging through the use of toys, scents, puzzles, and anything else that might provide novelty. In this way, the Zoo and its keepers help to keep the animals as mentally and physically healthy as possible.

What kinds of enrichment are there?
The enrichment used depends on the animal. Natural behaviors are researched to find out what the animals would react to in the wild. For instance, leopards are carnivores, so one thing we do for them is make a pinata of an animal they would hunt in the wild (such as an antelope). Primates such as the gibbons enjoy boxes, bags, and frozen treats with hidden food. Other animals get still other kinds of enrichment -- whatever will keep them interested!

How are enrichment items made?

Sometimes enrichment is as simple as giving the animal a new cardboard box or bag to enjoy. Other times, enrichment can be a tough and time consuming job. When we make enrichment items, there are a few things we keep in mind: Will the animal injure itself or others? Can the animal digest it if eaten? (Remember, if you can't, they can't either.) What behaviors will this object stimulate?

Come to the Zoo and make your own items! Check the Zoo calendar for Enrichment Day in June and help us make enrichment items, then stay for the action and watch as the animals enjoy these public-made toys and treats!
